Uttarakhand Tests Eco-Tourism Pods on Himalayan Trek Routes

To promote sustainable tourism, Uttarakhand has begun installing compact, prefabricated eco-pods on popular trekking routes like Kedarkantha and Har Ki Dun. These pods, made from bamboo and insulated panels, offer eco-friendly shelter to trekkers. Powered by solar energy and equipped with dry compost toilets, the pods are placed at 8–10 km intervals and blend with the natural landscape. Trekkers pre-book stays using a mobile app, which also gives trail safety alerts and weather updates. Locals have been trained to maintain the pods and offer guide services. The program aims to reduce plastic and human waste on trails while boosting village incomes through eco-tourism.
